Why do people tend to go to boys sports more than girl sports? While sports play a significant role in many people’s lives, providing opportunities for competition, and enjoyment, however, a very obvious trend is the tendency for audiences to favor boys’ sports over girls’ sports. This can be noticed in many ways like articles, movies, media posts and more such as school sports. School sports now play an important role in this topic due to the fact that schools are more often than not, starting to favor boy sports more than girls. A variety of students that attend Don Lugo High School have been interviewed regarding the question of why people tend to go to boys sports more than girls sports. In an interview with Jonathan Port, he stated that “Don Lugo promotes boys sports more than girls sports.”
During the morning announcement it is common to hear the speaker talk about the boys football team rather than the girls flag football team and if they won their game or not. When acknowledged for wins the girls team is commonly pushed aside for the guys team and there seems to be a stigma around girls vs boys sports at Don Lugo. During spring the two main sports, softball and baseball, have shown how easily they push aside girls sports. Last year’s softball team went undefeated in the league and got knocked out in the first round of CIF yet baseball lost many league games while making it slightly farther in CIF. Despite this, they only accurately acknowledged the baseball team making it to CIF and never mentioned softball going undefeated in league.
Another interview with a girls basketball player revealed “Boys basketball always get the attention because of the post on the Don Lugo Instagram showing the boys 1st first in league last year.” Now not only on the announcements are the girls getting pushed aside but on the school’s social media as well. They have posted about the boys team and their wins multiple times but only mentioned the girls teams a hand full of times. The girls team may have not gotten 1st place but they got 4th place in a tough league/division and worked hard. Now in this case may say the boys team gets more attention due to the fact the girls have not made CIF and only won Mount Baldy League in 21-22, but the girls league is challenging and full of young girls wanting to win. In a separate interview with a different player on the girls basketball team it was stated, “Maybe if the girls team got as much support as the boys team do we could make it farther with that encouragement.”
Senior Jordyn Beidler is starting a club for female athletes to get more support and recognition for the girls teams in our school. The Instagram page made for this club is “Femaleathletesoflugo” and is currently at 73 followers. Many teachers like Machuca are putting the name of the club and Instagram on there board to show there support for the female athletes. The female athletes are trying to get all the support they can get to change how the school looks at girl sports because so far it isn’t looking too good.
