Drumline auditions took place last Thursday in preparation for the “Winterline” season that will be happening sometime in early to mid-February. Winterline is composed of the percussionists and front line musicians within the Don Antonio Lugo marching band; some have returned from the year prior, while the rest are new to the experience. The first practice was held today by band director, Mr. Yanik, in great hopes that the season will be a memorable one, to which one Drumline leader, Ramiro Rodriguez, shares,”I hope we have a great season- I’m hoping that we’ll learn a lot.”

Regular Drumline and Winterline season have minor differences, there are no wind-orchestrated players, just percussion; with a front ensemble and the use of a “floor” while they play. A “floor” is what they put under them while they perform, it’s a representation of their theme and design for their show. Last year Winterline performed with a red carpet “floor” with a theme of Empire, this year the musicians still do not know what their “floor” will be, since it is  a surprise but they have high hopes that they will discover it soon enough, Denise Ramirez a vibraphone player excitingly shares, that she “already knows its going to be really cool”.

Winterline season is approaching, and the musicians could not be any more exited. The instructors, with the Head Percussion instructor, Reggie Ordonez, hope to teach each member the ropes to this year’s upcoming Winterline performances. The Winter Drumline practices every Monday and Wednesday, and on occasion, Saturday from 4-8 p.m. as they will also soon be competing throughout Southern California.
