Don Lugo has acquired new football players, but the real question is whether they will benefit the team. A few transfers pointed out by Blake LaPorte, class of ‘26, mentioned three names: “Caleb Calvin class of ‘25, Daniel Guerena class of ‘26, and Audomaro Richert class of ‘25. Ethan Elias class of ’26 who wasn’t mentioned, is more newly transferred is on a sit out period, the same as Audomaro Richert. One of which was mentioned on an Instagram account called “2026 Stars”, showcasing Daniel Guerena as a defensive back watch list. This information instills hope knowing Don Lugo has him on their team. A question one might have is why they want to transfer. Do they get more benefits or exposure to scouts or playing time at Don Lugo High School? Or was it due to having close connections with other players?
Transfer Audomaro Richert stated, “I know some of the players.” Joshua Morales, class of ‘26, said the new transfers have made a great impact on the team so far. It’s only the beginning of the season they will have time to grow stronger. When interviewing the football players, the main question was, “Is this year’s football team better compared to last year’s?” Comparing game stats from last year and this year, though it’s still early in the season, they’ve shown improvement. When playing against Los Osos last year, Lugo lost 55-36, while this year, Don Lugo may have lost this year again by 32-28. However the score shows they really fought hard for a close game or possibly a win. Which reveals there has been improvement with players and coaches in teamwork, communication, trust, and more.
According to Kalib Pacheco, class of ‘25, he said each transfer has contributed a lot to the team, whether it’s on offense or defense. Cory Wilson, class of ‘27, expressed how they are all “coachable,” which is an advantage to have individuals like that on your team. Not all, but more than half of the football players interviewed agreed that this year’s team is making it farther in the playoffs and has more chemistry than past teams, hopefully aiding to the teams chances of winning later in the season.
