Review: 2017’s Winter Sports Rally
January 13, 2017
The theme this year for the annual Winter Sports Rally was “Game Show.” The rally was put together last minute and it was clear that the energy level was low. But when the performances took place all the way down to when “Jimmy” hyped up the crowd before the class “yell off’s” it was apparent Lugo students attempted to make the best out of what they had.
The rally was kicked-off with an alluring performance from the DAL- Dance Team. Head of the Dance Department, Mrs. Avery, mentioned, “the dance team is to dance to six different genres of music this year. For this rally’s performance we went with hip-hop choreography.”
The DAL-Hip-Hop team also left students in awe due to their performance where they exhibited better choreography and style choices than their previous performances that made for possibly their best performance yet. Mark Cuellar, the brother of well known Lugo Hip-Hop Alumni Gilbert and Narcisso Cuellar lead the team during the performance at the rally, continuing the legacy of his older brothers, he stole the show.
“Jimmy” had the Don Lugo crowd bursting with enthusiasm as he performed a karate demonstration using nunchucks and “power moves.” He has been doing karate for only a year and is already on Purple status; the piece he performed during the rally was from his competition, back in December. When asked what his favorite part of the sport is, he replied, “I like to spar with my friends in karate and hang out”.
The finalé was the prom theme unveiling, which was delivered with immense enthusiasm from the hosts. However, the spark was shut down once the actual theme was revealed, the student body did not respond with the theme announcement accordingly- Isaiah Ruiz, ASB president, regards, “the theme for prom is really cool people” trying to convince the student body that it was something to be praised, and further tried to explain the theme. Mrs. Rigo-Witt later came on the platform and elaborated what the theme is meant to be, but the response from the students was still
indifferent.
This year’s 2017 Winter Sports rally had a series of highs and lows, but the Student Body can only expect and hope for a better outcome in the next upcoming rallies.
