Google Station providing fast WiFi to anyone, anywhere
September 30, 2016
Google plans to provide “fast WiFi for everyone, everywhere” within the coming months.
The program, Google Station, was inspired by another successful endeavor that Google constructed along the Indian Railway this past year. The similar program provides fast and reliable WiFi all across the Indian Railway to approximately 3.5 million users each month. Google saw the success in India and realized that excellent WiFi would benefit millions of users everywhere, including the U.S. Google is now working with partners and companies to set up several WiFi hotspots in places like malls, workplaces, and universities, allowing anyone to utilize reliable WiFi.
The program will allow users to access the internet with a username and password provided to the partner by Google, and some partners of the program will be able to monetize their WiFi, which is to have the ability to charge users for accessing their Station. Google Station will not be its own Internet provider, and will “piggyback off of” other Internet providers such as Time Warner Cable for example. Not all details of Google Station are yet specified.
