Say “hello” to HoloLens
May 10, 2016
Since the breakthrough of science fiction films, holograms have been thought to be a fantasy. As of 2015, Microsoft’s engineers have developed the latest technology to turn the fantasy into a reality: the HoloLens, a goggle-shaped device that allows the user to manipulate an augmented reality of their choice. Last year, Alex Kipman, a Microsoft Technician, claimed that “broad consumer availability is further down the line;” however, “further down the line” may just be the first quarter of this year.
The HoloLens provides an entry to a new generation of construction remodeling, gameplay, exploration of places and ideas- as well as improvement in social interactions. Users will be able to communicate with loved ones on Skype, play Minecraft in the comfort of their living room, or alter furniture and appliances to preview new in-home projects. Roughly, this gadget will be priced at about $3,000 dollars, covering the entirety of development.
According to Microsoft Corporate Vice President, Thom Gruhler, “HoloLens is redifining what mobile experiences can be.” Since the device is fully wireless, it is easy for the user to either say a simple command, such as “follow me,” gaze in a certain direction, or perform a hand gesture rather than the traditional touch-to-control way of operation used in most modern devices; setting the HoloLens apart from the rest. The HoloLens includes a variety of features that will ensure the user’s comfort and needs: a camera to take pictures and videos, sensors, speakers, and binaural audio, ensuring a sound that meets “cinema-type” criteria.
In retrospect, Samsung’s Oculus Rift holds similar qualities to the Hololens. Only, the Oculus proposes virtual reality, whereas, the Hololens provides augmented reality. The difference between virtual and augmented reality is accessing a virtual world that fills the user’s surroundings versus being in the real world with the addition of a few virtual components; in this case, holograms.
Since various devices are being constructed for technological advancement these past couple of years, the upcoming generation can only hope for an improvement for the everyday life to ensure the crispness and quality in the comfort of living.
