A raid by the U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement earlier this month at a popular Chino Hills car wash ended with five workers in custody and two deported, according to the business’s management.
Witnesses stated that within moments, about 10 government vehicles had surrounded the property, blocking both driveways. “It was chaos,” Manager Jose Alvarez said. Witnesses also recalled hearing shouting before spotting co-workers running. Janet Solano, a cashier at the car wash, recorded a short video of the raid, which quickly spread online and has drawn tens of thousands of views.
The incident happened the morning of September 4 at The Chino Hills Car Wash on Pipeline Avenue. Local officials said they were blindsided by the incident. Chino Hills Police Captain Al Girard and city leaders confirmed they were not notified beforehand. Major Art Bennett of Chino Hills noted that the city should have been alerted in real time, where therefore local police could have been dispatched to confirm the agents’ identities and prevent possible scams and impersonation.
Despite the raid, customers returned quickly, and the car wash is back in operation. “People are still coming,” Alvarez said. “We’re doing our best to move forward.”
