The Summer I Turned Pretty fans are told to start “acting normal” after the cast members start to see abuse and hate towards the them. The statement was made after the third and final season hit Prime Videos sparking intense emotions and feeling within the viewers. Lola Tung who plays the character Isabel also known as Belly, and Gavin Casalegno who plays Jeremiah, the fiance to Belly, has been targeted and received the most hate. This is largely because many fans want Belly to end up with Jeremiah’s brother Conrad, also known as Chris or vice versa.
When interviewed, The Summer I Turned Pretty fans attending Don Lugo High School were asked, “How do you feel about the cast receiving hate because of the characters they play in the show and could it effect the show?” Ameah Reyes, Class of ’27, who explained how she thinks it is “immature” because an actor that plays a character isn’t how they truly are in reality. She continues to state how it’s not reasonable to hate on actors when “all they are doing is their job.” She believes that the hate could affect the show because it is, “Continuous and really harming to the actors mental health.” This could lead up to canceling the show or the actor could drop out.
According to Breannah Chaires, class of ’27, she feels “It is not right at all because the character that they’re required to play during the show isn’t a representation of them in real life.” When questioned regarding the ‘team Conrad vs team Jeremiah’ love triangle in the show and the toxic reaction, Breannah discusses how viewers are very “passionate” about the show. The audience the show is targeting are teenagers, and for the most part they can be called an “immature age group.”
Toxic The Summer I Turned Pretty fans should consider remembering that actors are not their characters. Directing hate towards them can have serious consequences.
