On August 3rd 2025 a grandfather by the name of James Yokeley took his teenage granddaughters to Dairy Queen for a quick treat. The two girls found Cocaine and MDMA inside of their food. When the Wilmington Police Department, or WPD, spoke with Sarah Whisenant, the owner of the establishment, she denied ever seeing the individuals and defended her employees emphasizing, “None of her staff would have done this.”
When furthering investigating the case, the WPD found video footage of Yokeley shoving two pills into his granddaughters ice creams. The two young girls have been medically examined and are safe as they did not ingest the pills. Yokeley is now charged with two counts of felony “Contaminating Food or Drink with a Controlled Substance”, felony “Child Abuse”, and felony “Possession of Scheduled 1 Narcotics”.
The State Board of Elections and Surry County Board of Elections are still examining his case and ensure the appropriate justice will be served.
When asking students from Don Lugo High School whether or not they think fast food chains could possibly be putting substances in their food, Vivian Rubio, Junior, responded, “Yes, 100% . They could put chemicals in our food that could slowly kill us.” While WPD proved Dairy Queen had no act in the crime, there could still be a chance that fast food, restaurants, and more are able to sneak hazardous items in our food.
Additionally, when students were asked about their relationships with grandparents, the majority said they had a positive, healthy relationship, but not all. Camila Castillo, Sophomore, states her grandpa is unpleasant, “He just does things that are very obnoxious.” So while very many adore their grandparents, there are very many who would not trust their grandpas or grandmas.
