Trump’s pick for Secretary of Education is Betsy DeVos. Although DeVos is not liked among the general public, especially educators, Trump may just have a plan for education we can’t yet see.

Many citizens are outraged to hear that Trump nominated Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education, due to her lack of experience. I believe this is a good call on Trump’s part. Even though DeVos doesn’t have any experience in public education, she has an outsider’s point of view and quite a few good ideas.

In an article written by Clifford Kulwin, he states, “Betsy DeVos, Trump’s choice to lead the Department of Education, is as hostile to public education as one can be.” Yes, she doesn’t support public schools but why would anyone support the current way of doing things?  The United States ranks as one of the worst in science and math among other industrialized countries.  If charter schools get better results, why not try to mirror the way successful charter schools run in more schools and give people more choices in education?

She also supports vouchers which help low-income families afford better schools.  Everyone likes choice, I would much rather have the choice to attend a better performing charter school even if I picked my neighborhood school. Choice incentivizes the neighborhood school with a chance to become better so more kids will pick them over charter schools and vouchers to help families afford the choices other people have.

DeVos’s reform programs plan to improve and reform education by giving families as many options, regarding education, as possible. Heck, Betsy and her husband even played a role in giving Michigan families the great opportunity of choice towards public charter schools. “DeVos’s record is enviable on its own terms, and certainly doesn’t deserve the attacks her critics are leveling,” states David French, writer for the National Review.

An anonymous commentator states,”She doesn’t know about school, she has never had an office that has to do with education like principal or teacher.” Okay, and? Last time I checked she was selected to be the Secretary of Education, not a superintendent. Her job isn’t to teach or pick a curriculum, it is to advise the President on Federal policies, programs and activities related to education in the United States.
