The Don Antonio Lugo Jazz band competed in the anticipated annual Mt.Sac Jazz Festival held at Mount San Antonio College this past Saturday.

On May 7th, the band competed against six groups of other high schools throughout Southern California. They placed 2nd place in the Novice division with a score of 89 which within the highest ranking scores in the “superior” category.  All of the  judges present voted unanimously.

Senior Anthony Erroa and Junior Mikel Hopkins also competed in solo competitions and both won first place on Alto Saxophone and Guitar. With these outcomes they are surely hoping to be above Ayala High School in the Novice B Division. Class of 2017’s Jelly Guerrero shared, “This had to be one of the best jazz performances we’ve had so far, and after getting tips from Alta Loma’s jazz band director we truly improved our outcome.”

After the win, the band decided to put together a show for the physical education classes in hopes of recruiting more students for next year’s 2016-2017 Jazz Band. The group’s next competition will take place at the Riverside Community College on Friday May 13th at 4:30pm. We hope to see our beloved band continue their strive for greatness in years to come.
