Five friends have been competing for Don Lugo’s 2015 homecoming crown all week. Valerie Mendoza, Kaira Williams, Hannah Hernandez, Devyn Yates, and Alexis Chaires are this year’s homecoming court, nominated by their fellow classmates and supported by friends and family. Although each girl had memorable experience, sadly only one could be crowned queen.

Alexis Chaires, flies high in cheer and academics, her personality shines through her smile while being an influence to many girls. She loved seeing all the support of her friends and family throughout the whole experience. “…Winning homecoming queen to me, means an honor to represent the school I so proudly attend and cheer on!”

Devyn, nominated by the volleyball team, enjoyed the homecoming court experience. She has many friends and supporters on campus and it was no surprise when the well-known athlete was voted a princess. When asked about possibly becoming queen, Devyn replied,”I’m blessed with just being on the court, to be honest!”

Kaira, a fierce leader on the Don Lugo campus, is a part of Don Lugo’s hip hop team, soccer team, and is also an athletic trainer. Hoping to score a victory on becoming Lugo’s new queen, Kaira said, “It would be an honor to win queen and also an eye opener to see how much of the student body supports me”.

To Hannah, being nominated meant the opportunity to promote herself and make her renaissance class, the program that nominated her, shine. The whole school has seen how much she is loved and supported, especially at the night rally. Hannah’s biggest comment on the rally was, “I had my mom with me as my escort so it made everything even better!”

Dancing her way to earn a spot on the homecoming court, Valerie Mendoza, a talented, fun spirited young woman, was nominated by her fellow dance team members. To her, being on the court was not about winning, but being able to represent her school in a positive light. When asked about the girls on court, Valerie said, “Everyone is so helpful and nice, and each of the court members have been there for each other during this experience- whether it is cheering one another on or supporting each other.”

Throughout the whole experience, even down to the last seconds before the results were announced, the girls were seen cheering each other on. At the end of the night, the beautiful Hannah Hernandez, was crowned Don Lugo’s 2015 Homecoming Queen. “I’m so thankful for everyone who voted for me and supported me, I wouldn’t have blessed with this opportunity without them!”, said the new Queen.
