The Don Lugo Sports Boosters Annual Golf Tournament has made a comeback after Covid-19 canceled the annual event last year. The Don Lugo Sports Boosters 6th annual Danny Stowell Golf Tournament took place on October 15 at El Prado Golf Course in Chino, California.

The Don Lugo Sports Boosters is a dedicated group of parents of student-athletes who are attending or have attended Don Lugo High School. They fundraise money for their scholarships given to 10-15 student-athlete seniors every year, supply extra equipment for sports, and go above and beyond in helping to support less fortunate athletes with the expenses of their sport.

The Sports Boosters group has several ways of supporting the athletes at Don Lugo. They fundraise through their annual Fireworks booth and the “Danny Stowell Memorial Golf Tournament”. After not being able to have a tournament last year, the sports boosters were excited to be able to keep the tradition going in 2021.

Danny Stowell is an alumni of Don Lugo who tragically died in a river accident. During his time at Don Lugo, he played football and baseball. When he passed, the Don Lugo Baseball Program named their annual golf tournament after him, later to be picked up by the Don Lugo Sports Boosters.

On October 15, 80 golfers took to the greens to participate in a full day of festivities. The day consisted of a competition of ‘closest to the pin’, raffles, and a luncheon. Jeff Tribe was among the golfers who played in the tournament last Friday.

Jeff Tribe has attended and played in the golf tournament several times and enjoys playing with friends while supporting Don Lugo Sports. Although Jeff did not win the on-course competitions, he did walk away with some hardware, “It was a really fun time, I won the big raffle and won a new set of golf clubs,” said Jeff Tribe.

Jeff also credits Sports Boosters President, Bobby Martinez, for his efforts in putting the Golf Tournament on every year. Bobby is a Don Lugo Alumni (Class of 1982) and has been in Sports Boosters for 6 years, he is now the Boosters President.

Bobby says that his favorite part of putting on the tournament this year was being able to see some alumni who have the same interest in giving back to the athletes as him. “I know we all have a great time and it is all making money for those kids,” said Bobby. Bobby was very happy to be able to put this event on again and raise money for athletes.

The Danny Stowell Golf Tournament has made a comeback after being canceled and was a successful day. The Sports Boosters are continuously working to make more money for the student-athletes. They hope to be able to put the successful event on again next year.
