2017 Rising Star Winner is Lugo’s Very own!
December 3, 2017
In honor of recognizing the most qualified advisers for outstanding achievement and excellent advances in the newsroom, the 2017 Rising Star award presented by the J.E.A.(Journalism Education Association) is awarded to Mrs. Deming, Journalism adviser of Quest News. This award was offered to 4 advisers (with at most 5 years of experience) across the nation. Teachers selected for this award have had major impact on programs they run or advise.
In the 5 years Mrs.Deming has run the program, she has taken Quest News from a basic school newspaper to a top tier, award winning program. In order to reach students on a different platform, Mrs.Deming has switched from physical copies, such as newspapers, to a more modernized form of publication. Quest News’ 2014 staff introduced a modern type of journalism via the world wide web using SNO.
Multi-media was another addition added within the past 3 years, such as pod casting and online articles. Deming was inspired by a learning experience that brought these huge additives in the newsroom into effect. Herself and 32 other teachers were invited to an all expense paid trip to Missouri where they would learn about how to advise a proper newsroom.
After receiving the rising star award, Mrs. Deming is shooting for other goals and prestigious awards. She plans on applying for her MJE (Master Journalism Educator) with her end goal being to eventually win adviser of the year which is considered to be the most prestigious award given out. Among Deming, the other recipients of the award were: Tiffany Cavicchia of Mooresville High School in North Carolina, Sarah-Anne Lanman of Munster High School in Indiana, and Kathleen Plows of Malvern Preparatory School in Pennsylvania. All 4 advisers are paving the way of the future in News Publication and are inspiring the generation to come.
