Lugo boys varsity baseball team won their first round of CIF on Thursday, May 18, and is now heading to the second round stronger than ever. The boys beat Cajon High School with a dominating score of 13-1. The team played a marvelous game and they are overwhelmingly excited to play in the second round of CIF on Tuesday, May 23 against Santa Fe.

Don Lugo’s defense made fantastic plays virtually shutting down their opponents, holding them to only one run. All the while, their offense displayed its power, in scoring 13 runs. The team scored 4 runs in the first inning, 4 runs in the fifth inning, and 5 runs in the sixth inning. During the fifth inning, batter number 5, senior Jason Gardner, hit a solo homerun.

One of the key performances in this game was the pitching by Josh Torres. Josh pitched a near perfect game giving up one run and two hits which came in the last inning.

It feels great almost throwing a no-hitter but a little upsetting about not getting the perfect game, but at the same time we are advancing to the second round which that makes me happy to be apart of this team

— Josh Torres

Senior and third baseman, Nolan Fernandes stated,”It’s really cool to make it to CIF because we worked so hard this season and this is what we, as a team, have worked for.” Nolan had a great first inning, making 3 consecutive outs. Nolan continued saying,”I feel like we have really improved since our first game due to how  great our team chemistry is now and we have great coaches who work with us.”

Connor Burns, a freshman who plays catcher, stated,” I feel like I did okay during our season. Defensively, I feel that I’ve progressed a lot. Offensively, I had certain points when I was good and other times I was just okay. But thankfully, I’m a freshman so I have 3 more years to work on the little things to make me better.” He also had to say, “I feel like if we play like this for the rest of CIF, we have a shot at the title. This game was a big step for us and it can only get better in the future.” If this game is any indication of how the boys will continue to play, there is no doubt they will make a successful run in the CIF playoffs.

Senior, Josh Ibarra, makes an excellent play to 3rd baseman to make an out.
