Kennedy’s Voice Gets Heard
October 19, 2015
On October 15, 2015, Kennedy’s Voice attended a school board meeting to advocate against school bullying in our district.
Kennedy’s Voice is a club that was created after Kennedy LeRoy, a sophomore at Ayala High School, took his own life on June 12, 2015. The club’s mission is to convince the school board to adopt and enforce California’s education code, which is called the Safe Place to Learn Act, because the board is currently not abiding to the act to its fullest extent. In Leroy’s case, the No Contact Agreement signed by both Kennedy and his bully was compromised when administration did not enforce the 200-foot restraining order, and allowed Kennedy and his aggressor to be put in the same classroom.
Julianna Turner, currently a senior at Don Lugo, is a member of Kennedy’s Voice and takes a strong stance against the bullying in her community. She explains, “If I can pay homage to those people who were lost by helping to prevent others from committing suicide, it would been a really cool thing.” Equally and passionately against our school board’s lack of enforcement, Jenna Highstreet, also a current senior at Don Lugo, spoke at the meeting to aid the club with their goal. She stated, “I believe that school, equally important to education, is the development of an individual’s character, and I think it’s important to take that into consideration.”
If any DL student is interested in becoming a part of this club, Kennedy’s Voice can be contacted through their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/kennedysvoice?fref=ts&ref=br_tf .
