Los Angeles residents woke up to a New Years surprise early Sunday morning when the Hollywood sign was altered to say “Hollyweed.” The L.A.P.D. states that the incident was most likely a New Years prank.

This past November, the Californians voted to make recreational use of marijuana legal state wide for those that are 21 and older. The L.A.P.D. has their suspicions on a man, named Zach Fernandez, who goes by the social media name, “Jesus Hands” which is also the name that was found on one of the black tarps that covered one of the O’s of the Hollywood sign. Many students and people of the community of Chino are saying that this vandalism was done in honor of California’s new law legalizing marijuana.

Mid Sunday evening, the tarps were taken down but this is not the first time the sign was changed to say “Hollyweed.”  This action was done prior in 1976 by an art student from Cal State Northridge. The first time this happened was also the first day that the state of California’s “relaxed marijuana law” took in full effect.
