Most of today’s music top charts fall under widely known genres like pop, hip-hop, and rock, but do today’s top selling musical acts fall under these as well?

Trending bands like Twenty One Pilots and PVRIS have been gaining immense popularity and selling out shows. Whether you are a fan of these bands or not, you’ve probably heard one of their hit singles on the radio at least once without even realizing it. These musical acts often leave people wondering what genre they belong to because of the varying versatility in their music.

Ohio based duo, Twenty One Pilots is the most known for leaving people with confusion as to what genre they are. Although the duo categorized themselves as “electropop”, they’ve been classified as alternative hip hop, indie pop, and even reggae. Twenty One Pilots’ music includes intricate pop sounds and lots of uncommon techniques, like speak-singing rap,  yet their album Blurryface was a Billboard number one.

Breakthrough band, PVRIS also has a unique genre mix. PVRIS is classified as a metalcore band, but they’re often referred to as “synthpop,” post hardcore, and “electropop.” They went from playing at the Battle of the Bands stage at Warped Tour, to performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live in just a few short years.

As bands like PVRIS and Twenty One Pilots continue to grow and develop a bigger fan base, the innovation of blending genres into one band could be the next big thing.
