Anaheim, CA — Quest News student reporters from Don Lugo High School took home five awards from this year’s National Journalism Write-Off Competition and Convention on Saturday, April 27 in Anaheim. Over 1,000 students from across the nation competed in this year’s Journalism Education Association (JEA) write-off competition. Karly Ortiz won a third-place-category ‘Honorable Mention’ in Commentary Writing. Valerie Torres won a third-place-category ‘Honorable Mention’ in News-writing. Anthony Winslow won a second-place-category ‘Excellent’ in Editorial Writing, and Anthony Romero and Edward Lillie won the groups first ever third-place-category ‘Honorable Mention’ in Broadcast Online News Package against 22 other schools.
“This win means it’s time to build Quest into something even bigger…I’m motivated and confident we can begin telling stories visually for our site,” Anthony Romero said about the win.
This is Quest News’ second time winning write-off awards at a national write-off competition. The first time was in Seattle in 2017.
“A win at nationals is a HUGE accomplishment,” explains journalism adviser Annette Deming, “To have students work recognized at this level is an amazing feeling. It reminds my reporters why they work so hard throughout the year.”
